Do You Remember America?

I’m thrilled to announce that my new travel book, Second Breakfast In America, is out today!

It’s been a long road, in every way, to reach this point, but publication day has finally arrived.

Second Breakfast In America is a free-wheeling, action-packed adventure through nine US states (and two Canadian provinces), a celebration of discovering a country by bicycle, of chance encounters, and of roadside dining.

The book’s launch is timed to coincide with the 250th anniversary of America’s Declaration of Independence, and what a time it is for this particular celebration to occur. As reported here, I was back in Toronto last week on a short visit, looking out on icy Lake Ontario with New York State just thirty miles away across the water, reflecting on the last couple of years. I opened this post with the question ‘Do You Remember America?’, thinking about both that incredible summer of cycling down the length of the USA’s east coast in a daily search for second breakfast, but also about the crazy changes that have happened in the country since then.

The America I saw that summer—the one that many of us love—is still there, you can be sure, despite everything we all see and hear in the news: the huge and diverse population, the energy, the incredible hospitality, the stunning scenery, the crazy weather, and of course the mind-bending number of places to stop by the roadside for something to eat and drink…
